This past Friday I went to a little meet and great type thing that Brett Jackson put on at Mendon Ponds in Rochester. While there, I was able to cast a 2 handed rod for the first time.

I love watching spey casting on the internet, and had a great time giving 1 type of cast a try. I asked if you could use that type of rod and casting for ponds (which is where I fish most of the time.) I was told you could and a fly was even attached, and I even had a few hits. But, another guy there said that you wouldn't do it much, because it's more meant for swinging because all the line remains out of the rod until you catch a fish. I actually did find it kinda hard to strip the line in to make the fly dance, and then recast it all out again with a spey cast.

So, does anyone use a spey rod on ponds/lakes? Or is it typically only used in moving water?  if so, how do you get over bringing the line in and not having enough out to proper spey cast again without a few overhand casts to give more line?

Thanks!

You may want to look into compact skagit or compact scandinavian lines.  Not as much line needs to outside the rod tip and they shoot line like crazy.  I don't have any experience fishing stillwater with a spey set up though.
